ic! berlin began in 1996 in a Berlin-Mitte apartment, where three friends set out to solve a single engineering problem: glasses made from one sheet of steel, held together without a single screw, weld or drop of glue. No manufacturer would touch the idea, so they bought the machines and built the frames themselves.
The first model, Jack, was cut from 0.5mm stainless spring steel and weighed just 20 grams. Thirty years later, every frame is still made in Berlin with the same patented screwless clip hinge, flexible, near unbreakable, and repairable by hand without tools.
